Vegetables are full of goodness and essential vitamins that help your child to grow strong – result! Yet getting your chid to like the vegetables can often become a battle of wills.
Here is the Chewwies guide to the vegetables that most kids like and learn to love.
-
Butternut Squash
With a touch of sweetness that means it is even used in baking, butternut squash has both taste as well as an easy-to-eat soft texture on its side.
The ideal soup ingredient, it is also the perfect substitute for red meat in dishes such as curries, stews and one-pot dishes where it also perks up the visual appeal due to its vibrant colour.
-
Carrots
One of the few vegetables that children seem to love eating raw, and as they are full of Vitamins A, C, K and more, they are good for eye health, bone development and the immune system too.
For the carrot-refuser, try serving as a crudité with hummus or a selection of dips, and to crank up the flavour when they are served hot, glaze with maple syrup, adding a touch of star anise or cinnamon if your child can take it.
-
Peas
Peas, peas and more peas – kids just can’t get enough of them! And as they are full of Vitamins C and K as well as fibre, it is perfectly fine to use these as your go-to staple vegetable.
Great as a side dish with, errr, everything, blitz to make a yummy green soup too.
-
Sweet Potato
Wedge it, chip it or mash it, the clue is in the name as these are a little sweeter than their namesakes so perfect for fussy eaters.
They are great at absorbing flavours such as salt, garlic and herbs so feel free to come up with your own flavour combos.
Simple to prepare, simply clean and chop or dice then drizzle with a little olive oil before placing in the oven for delicious wedges or chips.
-
Corn on the Cob
Especially nice with a slathering of butter, kids love the playful element of devouring a juicy corn on the cob.
Equipped with that essential sweetness when it comes to kids taste buds, corn is a good source of fibre so is ideal for keeping their tummies healthy.
Eat as fresh as you can as 25% of a corn cob’s sweetness is lost within 24 hours.
